For more than a century, Nam Dinh Textile Factory has become a symbol of Nam Dinh, closely associated with the lives of the people here, from the whistle at shift change to the walls stained with time.... Although it is about to be demolished, for the people of Thanh Nam, the Textile Factory will forever be an unforgettable beautiful memory.

From now on, the people of Thanh Nam will no longer hear the Nam Dinh Textile Factory's shift-change siren three times a day, echoing throughout the city. The long, peeling, yellow walls will give way to a modern textile urban area.

As the time for the Textile Factory to be demolished approaches, memories of the past come flooding back, making many people who have spent their whole lives attached to the factory feel sad and regretful.

In 1898, French Governor-General Paul Doumer agreed to allow Mr. Dadre – an envoy studying the issue of Indochina silk – to establish a steam-powered silk factory in Nam Dinh city, located near the banks of the Dao River running through the city.

The long walls of the Textile Mill will soon be a memory.

The time-stained factories will be replaced by modern factories.

Mr. Vu Quang Lien, a resident living near Nam Dinh Textile Factory, said: “It is truly regrettable about the glorious past of Nam Dinh Textile Factory. Every morning at 6am, I hear the factory’s siren, and I take my children for a walk through the surrounding wall… But everything needs to be renewed, I just hope that the factory will keep a part of it as a souvenir.”

Many elderly people cannot help but feel nostalgic when remembering the payday when workers were as happy as if they were going to a festival; or the time when the whistle blew loudly at 6am to end the shift, children eagerly waited for their mothers to come home from work...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Sam, Nang Tinh Ward, Nam Dinh City, who used to be a worker at Nam Dinh Textile Factory, said: “Every time the factory paid everyone, I was happy. I still keep a peacock-shaped piece of fabric about 10 meters long. Now thinking back to that time, although it was difficult and hard, it was very happy. The workers encouraged each other to work. Knowing that the factory was being demolished, I was also sad. The factory was old and needed to be renovated. However, the Textile Factory will forever exist in the minds of us, the people of Nam Dinh.”

The country is developing day by day, Nam Dinh Textile Factory will be replaced by Nam Dinh Textile Urban Area Project with many expectations for change and economic development for Nam Dinh.

But the past, history, memories of more than 100 years with the sound of the whistle at the end of the shift, the peeling, yellowed walls, the sound of shuttles... will forever be a beautiful memory in the memories of the people of Nam Dinh.

In 2012, the Textile Museum was built, located at 5 Hoang Hoa Tham Street, Nam Dinh City, on the Traditional House of Nam Dinh Textile Joint Stock Corporation. The museum has a total area of 1.2 hectares. The main exhibition area was renovated and built in the ancient French style, including many rooms, each room has a separate display theme. The exhibits are a harmony between tradition and modernity, reflecting the development of the Nam Dinh Textile Industry in particular and the Vietnamese Textile Industry in general through the periods with the heroic spirit in fighting to protect the Fatherland and the achievements in the renovation period. In particular, the Museum also displays valuable artifacts about President Ho Chi Minh after his visits and work at the Nam Dinh Textile Factory.

The entire system of gardens, trees, and monuments of the Museum is planned and presented in a symmetrical manner to ensure functionality as well as combine aesthetic requirements with the goal of maximally preserving the existing landscape.
